Peru visits Colombia to learn about its health equity monitoring system

From 23rd to 27th February, there was an exchange visit to Colombia by a delegation from the Peruvian Ministry of Health to learn about the health equity monitoring system.

Since 2013, the Peruvian government has been implementing a health reform that seeks to make social protection universal and improve the social determinants that impact health. Within the framework of the EUROsociAL cooperation programme of the European Union, an institutional partnership was formed between Peru and Colombia which, based on the successful Colombian experience in establishing an Observatory for Measuring Inequalities and Analysis of Equity in Health (ODES), hopes to strengthen the health equity monitoring system in Peru.

The Peruvian delegation was comprised of representatives from PARSALUD II (Programme to Support Reform in the Health Sector), the Office of Statistics, and the Executive Directorate of Intelligence and Epidemiology of Peru's Ministry of Health.

In the course of the visit, the characteristics of Colombia's Integrated Information System for Social Protection (SISPRO) were explored in depth, the experience of the ODES was reviewed, and methods and techniques for developing a knowledge management system, the basis for informed and evidence-based decision-making, were shared.

The delegation will also participate in the event organised by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana on the influence of social determinants in health policies which will include the participation of Sir Michel Marmot, a former president of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health of the World Health Organization.
