Measurement and analysis of health equity

Policy-making for health represents a challenge for countries when it comes to organising a more equitable health system. Having adequate monitoring tools, with key indicators that reflect progress and changes driven by government action, is one of the demands expressed by countries. For this reason, the objective of this action is to contribute to the promotion, creation and establishment of tools for measurement and analysis of health equity in the participating countries.

This action is being approached through two initiatives:

  • On the one hand, based on regional policy commitments (Rio Declaration "All for Equity", 2011) and the World Health Assembly resolution, the action supports the design and implementation of national health equity monitoring systems and tools that ensure intersectoral actions for health equity (intersectoral commission, inequality observatories, etc.).
  • On the other, and in a complementary manner, work is being done to create a methodology for defining a core set of social indicators for measuring health equity for adoption at a regional level.
