EUROsociAL promotes a comprehensive programme of attention to women prison inmates in Argentina
EUROsociAL, a cooperation programme of the European Commission, has started up a “Model for comprehensive attention to women prison inmates: Inter-agency referral network” in Argentina's National Public Defender's Office
Based on Costa Rica's experience in the implementation of an Inter-agency attention network for women prison inmates and their dependent families last year, Argentina's National Public Defender's Office proposed to EUROsociAL undertaking a project modelled on this project.
To do so, on this occasion two public defenders from Costa Rica are working as experts in this project with their Argentine counterparts. EUROsociAL is promoting the exchange of experiences and best practices between counterparts, with the Spanish Law Society Foundation as operational partner, favouring peer-to-peer learning. On numerous occasions this type of exchange has led to more positive public policies.
On this occasion, the Costa Rica public defenders helped their Argentine counterparts to start up an inter-agency network and, at the same time, they identified Argentine best practices to take back to their country, such as the Gender Identity Act, which recognises the identity of members of the LGBT community, or the active participation of NGOs in the social reintegration of women prison inmates. An example of this is the “Yo no fui” [It wasn't me] organisation, which offers this possibility through different types of workshops, or the Association of Family Members of Prison Inmates, which works with the families of prison inmates as a forceful voice that makes itself heard in support of the needs of these people.
