El Salvador advances in the process of joining the Global Forum for Transparency and Information Exchange for Tax Purposes

The EUROsociAL II cooperation programme of the European Commission carried out a technical assistance mission to the Directorate General of Internal Revenue of the El Salvadoran Ministry of Finance

The European expert in charge of the mission was Mary Antoinette Musilek Álvarez, Coordinator of the International Taxation Area of the Sub-Directorate General of International Taxation of the Spanish Ministry of Taxation and Public Administration. She is also the Spanish delegate to the Global Forum for Transparency and Information Exchange for Tax Purposes.

The activity was aimed at helping the Salvadoran authorities understand the results of their Phase 1 evaluation; transmitting information on the “Common Report Submission Standard”; evaluating whether El Salvador complies with the standards imposed by the Global Forum; analysing Salvadoran legislation with respect to transparency in tax matters; analysing the experience of other countries in order to adapt the regulation to international standards for adequate information exchange; and facilitating the preparation of a technical team to represent El Salvador before the PRG in Paris in February 2015.

The support provided by EUROsociAL to the Directorate General of Internal Revenue of the El Salvadoran Ministry of Finance represents an important step forward in the country's process of becoming a member of the Global Forum for Transparency and Information Exchange for Tax Purposes.

The activity is part of the Promotion of voluntary compliance with tax obligations action of the Public Finance area, in which the Spanish State Tax Agency (AEAT) is acting as the operational partner.

The Global Forum for Transparency and Information Exchange for Tax Purposes brings together the jurisdictions and OECD members and non-members that have made a commitment to transparency and information exchange and worked jointly to develop international standards for transparency and information exchange in tax matters.
