Honduras strengthens mechanisms for criminal prosecution fo gender-based violence crimes and attention to the victims
A group of 35 Honduran professionals worked with Spanish prosecutors to fine-tune these instruments with the support of EUROsociAL
With the participation of specialised bodies of the Public Ministry and the National Police, both the NATIONAL PROTOCOL FOR INVESTIGATION OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE CRIMES and the PROTOCOL FOR MP-POLICE COORDINATION for these types of crimes were validated technically, with the support of Spanish prosecutors Ana Galdeano and Pilar Jiménez.
EUROsociAL, the cooperation programme of the European Union, has built up experience in this field by working with institutions in different sectors, supporting the creation of CAPRODEM (Centre for Assistance and the Protection of Women's Rights). This initiative reinforces the investigative practices of police and prosecutors in crimes of domestic and intimate partner violence against women.
In doing so, Honduras has joined the EUROsociAL action to fight gender violence, which already includes six countries in the region and fully complies with the provisions of the Regional Investigation Protocol adopted by the Honduran Attorney General in November 2013.
From the Public Ministry, Mercedes Bustillo, Coordinator of the Prosecutor's Office for Crimes Against Women, promoted this work which specifies the participation of the MP and the Police in the itinerary established in the Comprehensive Attention Protocol, also developed with the support of EUROsociAL. There is an explicit commitment from the Secretariat of Security and the Public Ministry that both investigation and coordination instruments will be endorsed and used by prosecutors and police. The process will culminate in formalisation of this commitment and the training phase, which will be developed in coming months.
EUROsociAL is an initiative financed by the European Union that promotes social cohesion in Latin America. The COMJIB manages the EUROsociAL II Fight Against Gender Violence Action technically and financially.
