Presentation of the book "Ejecución de la Pena Privativa de Libertad: Una Mirada Comparada" [Enforcement of the Sentence of Imprisonment: A comparative view]

In the presence of National Public Defender Stella Maris Martínez, Court of Criminal Cassation judge Alejandro Slokar, and the head of the Unit Specialised in Sentence Enforcement Law before the Court of Criminal Cassation for Criminal and Correctional Affairs, Rubén Aderete Lobo, the book Ejecución de la Pena Privativa de Libertad: Una Mirada Comparada [Enforcement of the Sentence of Imprisonment: A comparative view] The event took place at the Guillermo Díaz Lestrem auditorium of the National Public Defender's Office (Argentina).
The Public Defender highlighted that the book “is the result of a project in the Access to Justice component of the European Commission's EUROsociAL II Programme, and aims to contribute to strengthening the day-to-day work of public defenders in the defence of the human rights of prison inmates”. This action is managed by Fundación Abogacía Española and Justice Cooperátion Internationale (coordinated by Expertise France).
Martínez explained that “the policy and programme framework for the EUROsociAL project was integrated mainly through the Strategic Plan for implementation of the 100 Brasilia Rules of the AIDEF (Inter-American Association of Public Defender's Offices) and through the Resolutions of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States on Public Defence and Access to Justice.”
"Ejecución de la Pena Privativa de Libertad: Una Mirada Comparada" was prepared by the Public Defender's Offices of Argentina and Chile in a joint effort that included the participation of Borja Mapelli Caffarena, criminal law lecturer at the Law School of the University of Huelva, as an international consultant and the project coordinator. The publication included the collaboration of Cristina Caamaño, an Argentine expert and lecturer at the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires and also a national prosecutor in the Criminal Procedure Area. Chilean experts like Olga Espinoza, lecturer and researcher at the University of Chile, and Alicia Salinero, lecturer and magistrate in prison law, also participated.
This book, in offering a review of national and international laws and a specialised bibliography on enforcement of sentences, aims to be a contribution to better assurance by the public defence service in the sentencing phase and a significant advance in social cohesion and access to justice for prison inmates.
